Bucs Lead the League in Offseason Arrests

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Rotoworld has kept track of all NFL arrests this offseason, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lead the league in arrests. Even in the offseason the Bucs remain committed to setting records.

The four Buccaneers they’ve listed are Alex Magee (cited for possessing marijuana), Aqib Talib (felony assault with a deadly weapon), Assistant to the Head Coach Jay Kaiser (DUI) and Director of Pro Scouting Shelton Quarles (DUI). Brian Weiss, former Luxury Suite Sales Manager, was also listed, though it’s not clear whether he was even employed by the Bucs at the time of his arrest. When asked about Brian Weiss’ status with the team after the arrest, ‘sources’ told several separate reporters that he was no longer a Buccaneer. Weiss was charged with “traveling to meet a minor for sex, obscene communication using a computer, and lewd and lascivious behavior.”

The Bucs also had several in-season arrests, as Geno Hayes was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing, and Jerramy Stevens was arrested on drug charges. Stevens was immediately released. In addition, Mike Williams was arrested for DUI, but those charges were dropped as he never failed any of the alcohol or drug test administered to him.

These incidents should never happen, but can never be entirely prevented either. The Bucs punish these transgressors in-house, but never make their actions in these cases public. This wave of arrests has to concern the front office, and it could lead them to take some very public action once the lockout is over. At the same time, all these people are valuable to the team, and the first concern of the team should always be to win games. Besides that, it’s not clear whether teams or the NFL would even be allowed to discipline players for any behavior during the lockout.

Let’s hope there is an NFL season for these guys to redeem themselves!

Convicted Drunk Driver Charged With DWSL in Tampa

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

A Jacksonville man convicted about five years ago of DUI manslaughter was arrested near Ybor City early Sunday after being stopped for not wearing his seat belt, according to records.

Aaron B., 27, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Impala near N 15th Street and E Sixth Avenue when police pulled him over, the arrest affidavit said. Police discovered Aaron’s Florida driver’s license “was very bad,” according to the affidavit.

The Florida Times-Union reported that Aaron was driving while intoxicated in 2006 and crashed on Interstate 95 in Jacksonville. One of his passengers was ejected from the vehicle and died. Another was injured.

Less than two months later, Aaron was arrested again after driving away from his court hearing with his license suspended, according to the news reports.

Duval County court records show Aaron pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and in 2007 was sentenced to two years in state prison and five years of probation. The sentencing included a permanent suspension of his driver’s license.

On Sunday, Aaron was charged with driving with a revoked license and violating probation. He was being held without bail in the Hillsborough County Jail.

As you can see, this offense landed Aaron back in jail, as probation violations commonly do. This is why anyone convicted of DUI would be well advised to follow their probation or parole guideline to the T.

BUI Suspects to Perform Sobriety Tests on Water in “Operation Dry Water”

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

You’ve heard it many times, don’t drink and drive or you risk getting a DUI. But the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office is also warning about BUI’s, boating under the influence, and they’re telling folks not to operate a boat if you’re going to consume alcohol.

More than 17% of boating fatalities result from alcohol use. So HCSO Marine Unit deputies along with state and federal boating agencies will be out in force this weekend, June 24th-26th for Operation Dry Water. It’s an annual campaign focused on the detection and enforcement of boating under the influence.

Deputies also want to raise awareness among all boaters that it is unsafe as well as illegal to operate a boat under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Operating a recreational vessel with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher is against federal and most state laws.

Boaters caught operating under the influence will find their voyage terminated and their vessel impounded. Additionally, penalties can include arrest, fines, loss of boating privileges, even loss of driving privileges.

If you’ve already been accused of BUI, DUI or a related criminal offense in Tampa, it’s very important that you quickly contact a Tampa DUI lawyer to discuss your legal defense. Without qualified legal representation on your side, you’ll be doomed to accept all the outrageous penalties that come along with a DUI conviction.

WWE’s Alex Riley Cleared of DUI Charges

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

WWE talent Alex Riley has been cleared of charges stemming from driving under the influence in Tampa, Florida in November 2010, reports TMZ.com. His lawyers went before a judge earlier this month and argued that police had no probable cause for a traffic stop that led to his client’s arrest. The judge agreed, rendering the field sobriety test and the officer’s observations about Riley inadmissible.

Riley was arrested in Tampa, Florida on November 17, 2010, at 1:14 a.m. on charges of driving under the influence, after refusing to be tested. He was released at 9:33 a.m. on a $500 bond. Riley was also charged with driving with a suspended license.

You see, even if you are under the influence, but are driving safely and abiding by traffic laws, police have no right to pull you over and, in turn, charge you with DUI. However, it does happen very frequently which is our Tampa DUI attorneys are here. By doing a through investigation of your arrest, we may be able to help you get your charges dropped as well.

Motorcyclist Blames ‘boogeyman’ For Crash, Charged With DUI

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

John Doe, 49, of Golden Gates Estates, was arrested Sunday by Florida Highway Patrol officers at Physicians Regional Hospital, where he was taken for treatment of minor injuries after being found trapped underneath his motorcycle after crashing it into trees, reports the Naples Daily News.

When officers arrived at the hospital to question Doe, they heard screams and profanity coming from Doe’s room. When they questioned him they detected a very strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

During questioning about the accident, officers asked him how he became trapped under his motorcycle. He told them that the ‘boogeyman’ did it and the officers could not arrest him.

He was wrong.

In reality, there may be no proof the suspect was even driving the motorcycle and any chemical tests administered at the hospital may have been taken after his blood alcohol rose up (thus meaning he may have not been intoxicated if he was driving.) These factors, along with many others, must be looked into if this man or anyone else charged with DUI in Tampa expect to avoid being convicted.

Apple Bans DUI Checkpoint Apps, Google Stands Pat

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Apple has agreed to reject smart-phone applications that would inform users of DUI checkpoints, after a group of senators sent a letter of concern to the company, as well as to Google and Research in Motion (RIM), back in late March.

Democrats Harry Reid of Nevada, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Charles Schumer of New York and Tom Udall of New Mexico wrote an open letter to the companies March 22, GCN reported at the time.

Autoblog reported June 8 that Apple announced the change to its iOS apps approval process in conjunction with this week’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Section 22.8 of the guide states that “apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected”.

After the senators wrote their letter, RIM immediately pulled two apps, Trapster and PhantomAlert, which also list speed traps, enforcement cameras and other road hazards.

Evidence Argued in Tampa DUI Manslaughter Case

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Judges usually don’t like devious lawyers.

But a judge told the attorney for a Tampa dentist charged in drunken driving death of two pedestrians to be creative when he and his experts examine the car the dentist was driving if they want to deceive prosecutors.

Circuit Judge Kimberly K. Fernandez wasn’t endorsing any evidentiary hanky-panky. She was trying to resolve a spat between prosecutors and the attorney for Matt M.

Matt’s attorney asked the judge to let him and his accident reconstruction experts examine the Cadillac the suspect was driving without the other side looking over their shoulders.

His attorney claimed it would all be protected work product.

Assistant State Attorney Barbara Coleman argued that she and the lead detective in the case need to oversee the inspection to preserve the integrity of the evidence. She said under state discovery laws she would be entitled to it eventually.

Fernandez said the detective could be there, but not Coleman.

She also had some advice for Matt’s attorney.

“Be creative,” she said. “There are ways to avoid what you’re arguing to me.”
